Frederick Bowl

We're hosting our first ever Frederick Honors College 5v5 flag football tournament, the Frederick Bowl, on Saturday, January 27, 3:00–8:00 p.m., at the Pitt Sports Dome.

Do you have friends whom you would like to play with? If so, encourage them to select the same team as you. If you don’t have a team but would like to play, please select “free agent.” Free agents will either be made into one team or placed on a team without a full roster. Teams will consist of 610 players.

Registration will be open until Friday, January 19, 2024.

The tournament will be separated into two divisions: Men’s Division and Women’s Division. The Frederick Bowl will follow the NFL Flag football rules, which will be sent to student participants before the tournament. Each team is responsible for learning the rules, but they will be reviewed for each team prior to their first game.

Please contact Jason Russell at jar132@pitt.edu with any questions.

Resources to get started

Offensive Rules

  • All passes must be forward and received beyond the line of scrimmage
  • All players on offense are eligible receivers
  • Only direct handoffs are permitted—there are no laterals or pitches anywhere on the field
  • The quarterback has seven-second pass clock to get rid of the ball
  • The quarterback can’t run with the ball unless it was handed off first
  • Offensive players must steer clear of the rusher and may not get in his/her way
  • All offensive flag football penalties result in a loss of down and yardage

Defensive Rules

  • Any defensive player lined up seven yards off the line of scrimmage is eligible to rush
  • If the ball is handed off, any defender may rush
  • Interceptions are returnable (even on extra point attempts)
  • The ball is dead when it hits the ground, the offensive player’s flag is pulled from their belt, the ball-carrier steps out of bounds, or the ball-carrier’s body—outside of their hands or feet—touches the ground
  • All defensive flag football penalties result in an automatic first down and some are associated with yardage

No Run Zone

  • Whenever the offense is 5 yards or less from a first down or touchdown, they are now in the No Run Zone. Any play in the no run zone must be a pass. They cannot hand the ball off and run for the first down or touchdown.
