Prized Books

ENGLIT 1832 - spring course

Don’t just read prized books — challenge what makes them ‘prized’ in the first place.

Who decides? Academics, the Nobel Prize ... Oprah? It’s not that simple, actually. Unravel the stories behind how the classics came to be, and why "high brow" doesn't mean best.

Western perspective shapes the dialogue around literature — but we’ll be reviewing books from all around the world. We’ll evaluate how global power dynamics influence literary views, what it means to be a reader in the world.
