Rise of Islam: 500-1200 CE

HIST 0753, RELIGST 0454 - spring

Travel back to Islam's formation, and it is indistinguishable from the way we portray it today.

This course expands beyond just the Arabian Peninsula, and frames the context of the borderlands, history, culture, and remarkably diverse views that influenced early Islamic philosophies.

Course highlight, Spring 2019:

  • Meet the coins curator of Princeton University library, who will lead a hands-on session about numismatics. (How scholars use coins to infer interesting information about a period of history when we don't have many other sources.)

Take this class if you: want to look at this politically pressing (and often misportrayed) religion more critically.
